Despite the Recession, One in Four Businesses Call the Owner ‘Ma’am’

By MICKEY MEECE, New York Times

Real women of Atlanta at Rain Nightclub Hot Pink Breast Cancer Charity Party

The Center for Women’s Business Research was founded nearly two decades ago by a group of women seeking to win respect for businesses run by women. But even center officials were surprised by the findings in their own report: that those businesses play a significant role in the economy.

The report, which was released last month, estimated that eight million businesses — or 28 percent of all businesses — were owned by women, and that those businesses created or maintained 16 percent of all jobs in a range of industries like business services, personal services, retail, health care, communications and real estate.

Scholarly Spotlight on Higher-Education in Atlanta

While all of us did not graduate from Historically Black Colleges or Universities, we still embrace the significance these colleges have on not only African-Americans but Atlanta as a whole.

Atlanta is home to some of the most diverse schools in the nation. Located in the heart of the city lies the Atlanta University Center. Here is a historical perspective on the schools that make up the HBCU’s in Atlanta. After reading this post, please share your HBCU experience regardless if you attended one or not.

black college for women in Atlanta

The Historically Black Colleges of Atlanta

Alton Hornsby Jr.

Amid the major readjustments that African American freed people had to make after the Civil War, an immediate zeal for education arose. In most of the South, the first elementary education for freed persons was carried on under the auspices of the American Missionary Association and the Freedmen’s Bureau. In one such school in Atlanta, John Greenleaf Whittier received the inspiration for his poem “Black Boy of Atlanta.” As he toured the facility with the head of the Freedmen’s Bureau, a young black boy, Richard R. Wright, told the white men they could carry a message back to Northerners—tell them that “we’re rising!”

The complex of historically black colleges in Atlanta today forms the largest center for the higher education of blacks in the world. For many years, these institutions, their work, and the black elite that they launched offered a stark contrast to the everyday life of many black Americans.

“Are successful black women obligated to reproduce?”

mom-and-daughter/real women of Atlanta

This great commentary article from Essence by Demetria L. Lucas raises thoughts and opinions on the idea that successful black women are obligated to reproduce in order to bring up the black community. It was stated in the article that, “The people in our community that need to produce the most are not and the people who need to stop producing, multiply like there is no tomorrow”. While this statement may be true, I do not agree with the idea of it being an obligation for successful black women. In fact, I think it is completely absurd. With successful black women being seen as the more responsible and level headed of the community, they understand the responsibilities that come with raising a child and it is nothing that you jump into because someone said you should. I don’t think it is anyone’s obligation to start having children until they are completely ready and MARRIED! This idea is just plain nuts.

What do you think? Do successful black women hold such an obligation to the black community? Or is this idea just crazy?
